Lesson 34: DUC / DUCT

Practice 3: Reading Passage
When Dr. Maria Santos was inducted into the Engineers' Hall of Fame, she reflected on the structures that had defined her career. She had designed viaducts that spanned impossible chasms and aqueducts that brought fresh water to drought-stricken regions.
"To educate young engineers," she said in her acceptance speech, "is to produce the future. We don't just conduct lessons—we introduce students to new ways of thinking."
She spoke about the importance of leading by example. "A conductor stands before an orchestra and trusts every player to follow. Engineering is the same. You deduce solutions from data, but you also induce collaboration through trust."
Critics once tried to reduce her achievements to luck. But the evidence was hard to dispute. Project after project, she helped reduce water shortages and conducted teams through impossible deadlines.
"Some people try to abduct credit for others' work," she admitted. "But I never let that seduce me into bitterness. Instead, I deducted it from my worries and moved on."
Her final words were simple: "Lead well. That's all any of us can do—lead well."
