Lesson 39: STAT / SIST
The Root
STAT and SIST come from Latin stare and sistere, meaning "to stand."
When you see these roots in a word, think about standing—standing firm, standing still, keeping something in place, or causing something to stop.

Maria's circumstances had never been stable. Growing up in a state of constant change—new schools, new cities—she learned early that nothing stays stationary for long.
But Maria had something that made her stand out: persistence. When teachers insisted she couldn't succeed in advanced classes, she resisted their low expectations. When friends consisted mostly of people who didn't understand her goals, she persisted anyway.
At eighteen, she took a job at a small radio station. Her status was low—she assisted with everything from coffee runs to equipment setup. But she established herself as reliable. When opportunities existed, she stood ready.
Years later, a statue of Maria stood in the lobby of the media company she founded. Visitors would glance at her status—CEO, philanthropist, influencer—and assume she'd had every advantage.
"The circumstances of your birth don't determine where you stand," Maria often said in interviews. "What matters is whether you resist the pressure to stay down, insist on your own path, and persist when things get hard."
Her company consisted of people who believed the same thing: existence is not about where you start. It's about where you choose to stand.
